Artists
and researchers will navigate the São Francisco River from the
Southeast to Northeast of Brazil making art interventions, workshops and
collecting material for future works and for a publication.
Art interventions are free of censorship and guiding thematics although
all of them, deal somehow with the idea of diversity and connection, of
displacement and going home. The logistic of the expedition and its scientific
documentation will be available on the web, constantly updated from the
boat and this content (some in also in English) will be shown during the
workshops the crew of the boat will hold to the communities on the margins
of the river. Surely, this is not a project of digital inclusion but it
is in all its process, entirely based on digital technologies and communication.
Look at our travel diary updated from the 12th to the 27th april at: www.expedicaofrancisco.net/diario.
“Old Chico” is a tender nickname given to a river in Brazil
which is also the symbol of “the national unity”: São
Francisco River. Brazil, as a continental country, presents vast natural
resources, extreme geographic extension and numerous complex ecosystems.
Rio São Francisco has, besides that all, an enormous energetic
potential (hydroelectricity), and sources of life because – specially
because it runs through a semi-desert region of the country’s northeast.
Under this optic, we risk to talk about unification and diversity as being
indivisible concepts. It is amazing how this river has such importance
for the culture and imagination of Brazilians, specially referring to
the image of an unified culture.
At this moment the Brazilian government implements a controversial construction
for the water transposition of this river. Although there has been a lack
of debate of such giant ecological intervention (with its impact on fauna,
flora and human landscapes) the construction has began.
It is in this actual though important context, that a group of artists
and researchers, denominated “Expedição Francisco”,
gathered for discussion about connection/diversity and planned, as one
of the interface with the public, the Navigation of the river in its extension,
on a floating atelier during April 2008. The crew from diverse ethnic
origins and creative/knowledge areas will make interventions during the
journey. This project has been welcomed by the artistic community in São
Paulo and has gotten funding from Funarte and Petrobrás.
The prior objectives of this publication is to be a platform for the debate
about the region of the São Francisco River and consequently its
actual historical moment: the governmental project for the water transposition;
From the artistic point of view, the debate begins with the free interventions
on the boat and at the margins of the river, using diverse materials,
supports, strategies, languages and timings. Later on, a common new language
or atmosphere will persists on the publication, as it would be an extension
of these creative experiences but then on the paper, in form of a book,
diary of board, documentation of feelings, instincts and non verbal phenomena.
From the ecological point of view, there will be the possibility of theorists
and general population to manifest as written text what this moment represents
for the country. There will be also the point of view of Nabor Kisser,
biologist, part of the crew, who will make a diary of the journey. From
the Human Science point of view, several theorists will be invited to
make a contribution to the book, with essays and dialogues about the situation
of the region today.
